Goodnow Mtn
I had left the house early this morning for this hike, 6 am. I knew there was rain in the forecast for the morning at some point, so my hope was to at least make it to the summit before it began to rain. It was a great idea, and in fact, as I was traveling to the trailhead I began to wish I had left an hour earlier as it was spectacular with this early morning sun hitting all those multicolored leaves. The leaves are at peak in the Adirondacks, and this morning's sun, from sunrise until it got above the clouds had lit up the entire woods. But alas, I was not going to make the summit before the sun was obscured in the clouds. However, I still had some wonderful views, and It never rained on me. This mountain is just outside Newcomb, NY...
Mt Arab
This is a very nice family-oriented hike if you're in the Tupper Lake area. This mountain along with Mt. Coney and Goodman Mt. make up the Tupper Lake Triad, it's also one for the New York State Fire Tower challenge. I hadn't really hiked all summer, except for Little Haystack Mt in Buck Pond campground. I wanted something on the easy side to get me back into the groove, but also to see how Misty would do. She did great as expected. This is a short hike at 1 mile to the summit, over a very gradual incline. When I arrived at the trailhead it was about 10 am. The parking lot was full. I suspect this is a very popular hike since it is so close to Tupper Lake, and easy climbing to the summit. As I said, the trail is well marked and taken...
Little Haystack Mtn (Buck Pond)
I have known about this little hike for quite a few years, but it has been typically too warm for me to hike, and besides, we're usually camping and that is my lazy season. The hike begins just off the road in the campground that leads to the beach. It starts on a blocked-off road in the campground (Buck Pond Campground) as marked on the campground map. It continues along following Lake Kushaqua for about 1.25 miles until finding the trail junction on the right. This area provides several areas to jump in for a swim, or for the dogs to get a drink. Lake Kushaqua/Mud Pond Road is an abandoned railroad bed, which has many uses during all seasons. Coming from the campground direction you will know when you have reached the junction, or...
Vancouver, BC 2013
In November of 2013, I was asked to attend the CITIG conference. I was to represent the northeast corridor of the US for inter-operability. This was a big deal. I took on the challenge but must admit I did feel out of my element. There were a lot of engineers at this 3-day conference, beyond my experience. But, none the less it was a great experience, and was honored that my boss felt I was up to the challenge. It was a great group of people, doing great things, for great reasons, public safety. Pictures.
